Oregon Manufacturing Innovation Center, Research and Development (OMIC R&D) combines the efforts of industry and academic partners to develop advanced metal manufacturing technologies and processes. Their facility features a world-class collaborative environment, allowing the team to develop new tools, techniques, and technologies to address near-term manufacturing challenges through applied research and advanced technical training.
In an effort to engage the community, OMIC R&D recently invited four high school teams to compete in designing a machine that could effectively hurl a golf ball inside our new Additive Manufacturing Center. The teams were composed of students looking to enter the field of advanced manufacturing. Each team was supplied a 3-D printer by OMIC R&D, given four weeks, and challenged in four categories – Design, Execution, Accuracy, and Distance.

Project MFG designs and hosts advanced manufacturing competitions to demonstrate and inspire a movement to restore America’s industrial base by attracting new talent to skilled trades.
